Precious ormaments of a rangatira ( Maori Chief ) and his family, such as feathers worn in the hair and greenstone pendants, were stored in waka huia ( treasure boxes ). The importance and tapu of these boxes and their contents was signified by their fine carving. They were hung from the rafters of the house. This series of photos consentrates on the small messages which can be found in the story which is told through the carvings on the waka huia.
About the Carver
The carver of these pieces is Don Jack [ Te Aupouri / Te Rarawa ] who sadly passed away in July of 2008. He was a good friend who was keen, when appropriate and possible, to push the boundaries of the traditional art of Whakairo( Maori Carving ). See more Waka Huia carved by Don here
